We are a group of rural farmers and professionals, combining practical farming experience with professional and academic experiences in Canada and around the world. By collaborating through the Grey Bruce Centre for Agroecology, each of us is better able to contribute our unique skills, experiences and talents to furthering agroecology and the development of fair and resilient food systems in Canada.
A resilient and fair food system that is rooted in healthy soils and thrives on diversity, local knowledge and the sharing of experience.
Contribute to the development of resilient and fair food systems by fostering bottom-up research, education, extension and policy development for agriculture, food storage and processing, distribution and marketing.
Agroecology is both a science and a set of practices. As a science, agroecology is the “application of ecological science to the study, design and management of sustainable agroecosystems.” As a set of agricultural practices, agroecology seeks ways to enhance agricultural systems by mimicking natural processes, thus creating beneficial biological interactions and synergies among the components of the agroecosystem. Today many researchers define agroecology to be the integrative study of the ecology of the entire food system, encompassing ecological, economic and social dimensions, from field to fork (and back).
